Today the Hyndburn’s Woodlands Volunteers were back at Whinney Hill Woodland to carry out some meadow maintenance work!
Today, we started the work to extend the current butterfly glade, located at the top of Whinney Hill. Previously, this glade was first worked on by the Hyndburn’s Butterflies Project, and then by the Hyndburn’s Woodlands Project. We have seen a wonderful increase in the species diversity of the site, having found 19 different wildflower species!
Now, we are extending the glade further into the woodland. We aren’t starting entirely from scratch though! There were a number of Primroses that had previously been planted by the Hyndburn’s Butterfly Project, along with a Field Scabious, and plenty of Thistle!
To start with, a fresh path has been cut into the woodland, easing work and visitor access. Then we cut back encroaching trees and shrubs, to allow more light to breach the canopy. Then, we carried out an early scythe to keep the grass short, followed by creating patches of bare soil which were seeded with UK native wildflower seeds.
