On Tuesday 4th February the Hyndburn’s Woodlands Volunteers were at Huncoat East woodland making repairs to a portion of fence that had been vandalised.
Volunteers first used hand tools to clear any scrub that was growing around the fence, the scrub was piled up for later usage.
Volunteers then used their joinery skills to replace the sawn and damaged timber with fresh, treated timber. Joining plates were used to give the structure durability.
A small, non-native Leylandii tree was spotted and was promptly felled. The arisings from the Leylandii did not go to waste as it fit nicely into our plan for the fence.
Not all of our volunteers worked on the fence, some ventured into the woodland to find appropriately sized tree limbs which were used to create stakes.
Once repairs had been made, the newly made stakes were driven into the ground bordering the fence and the space between the stakes and the fence were packed with scrub and Leylandii arisings. In this way, a dead-hedge was created with the new fence, providing much more structure and offering space for wildlife.
Thank you to our wonderful volunteers for helping us keep Hyndburn’s Woodlands safe, and for improving wildlife habitats!
As always, thank you to our funders at Lancashire County Council, Hyndburn Borough Council, and the Windfall Fund for making it all possible
