On Monday 10th June 2024 the Hyndburn’s Woodlands Volunteers took part in the Great UK WaterBlitz, a citizen science scheme dedicated to assessing the quality of the UK’s waterways
For this session, we decided to carry the activity out at Woodnook Vale LNR (Woodnook Water). For the scheme, we assessed two water parameters, Nitrates and Phosphates.
Participants used the water testing kit provided by the survey organisers. A small amount of water was taken from the river and sucked it a test tube filled with a reagent, the water would then change colour depending on the amount of nitrate/phosphate present.
We are very happy to report that both parameters came back at the lowest threshold, indicating the river has low pollutants which in turn indicates good health.
Thank you to everyone who came along and helped us protect our waterways, and thank you to the Great UK WaterBlitz for letting us take part!
Activity funded by Lancashire County Council, Hyndburn Borough Council, and the Windfall Fund.
